Non-Conference Intrigue: MSU at Cal

“Non-Conference Intrigue” is supposed to be a series highlighting some of the more interesting non-conference games in the 2008 Big Ten Football schedule.  Ten bucks says I only get around to posting about three of these.

Week One, Michigan State at Cal:  I’ve got to hand it to the ol’ Big Ten.  We’ve got some nice BCS matchups this year.  Mark Dantonio took the Spartans to a bowl game in his first year by breaking the seasons-old MSU trend of disappearing over the back half of the season.  Maybe this was accomplished by emailing that mojo to Cal, who started 5-0 with wins over Tennessee and Oregon (when it was still the good, with-Dixon Oregon) before finishing 1-6.  Which trend will continue on August 30th? Prediction: Final Big Ten Standings

It is the heat of the summer and baseball’s All-Star Game break.  With nothing to watch on television, this BigTenFans.com writer decided to make his expert prediction on the final Big Ten standings.  To tackle such a task, there has to be some rationale behind it.  How about the Magic 8 Ball?  No.  There was more thought than that. 2008 Michigan Preview

The end of an era and the beginning of a new one.  Lloyd Carr is gone, Rich Rodriguez is here.  In response to the Michigan faithful requesting a shift away from the traditional 10 yards and a cloud of smoke to a more exciting offense, the Wolverines went way out of the box and hired Rich Rodriguez.  Will the move pan out?  If so, how long will it take? Michigan vs. Ohio State 2008: A Trend.

Here’s a little trend I found regarding first-year coaches in the Michgian-Ohio State legacy.  In the last six times Michigan has brought a new coach to the game, they’ve won: Read more »

Non-Conference Intrigue: Michigan vs. Utah

“Non-Conference Intrigue” is supposed to be a series highlighting some of the more interesting non-conference games in the 2008 Big Ten Football schedule.  Ten bucks says I only get around to posting about three of these.

Week One, Michigan vs. Utah: The debut of Rich Rodriquez in Ann Arbor.  If only Michigan had scheduled BG as one of their usual MAC-ponents for week two, they would have completed an unprecedented Urban Meyer coaching walk backward through time.   Especially with Notre Dame the week after that (Meyer was the WR coach their before his BG gig).  An opportunity lost, I guess. CFBNews Tries Too Hard

CFBnews.com has a list of their (Pere Fiutak’s) thoughts on what each program’s “Mr. Football” would be in response to ESPN’s Face of the Program discussion.  In general, I can’t complain.  (I don’t know, Penn State Fans, is Jack Ham the best choice for player?)  But there was, to me, one glaring error among the Big Ten teams. The Cradle of Coaches?

Is it just me or has our beloved Big Ten become resigned to being the practice field for new/young coaches?  When Barry Alvarez stepped down he made Bret Bielema the youngest HC in D-IA only to be outdone when Pat Fitzgerald took over months later at Northwestern.  Now Joe Tiller has named Danny Hope, himself only a HC for 5 years at East Kentucky (Oh, the Hilltoppers?!  No, the Colonels.) as his hand-picked successor.  Don’t even bring up Tim Brewster.  What gives?  We’re like the low self esteem women on Dr. Phil that won’t leave their loser husbands because we think we don’t deserve better.  It’s at best a risky work-in-progress and at worst a complacent defeatest strategy that may ultimatly stunt the conference’s growth irreprably. Ohio State (and the Big Ten) Lose Again

For the second straight year, Ohio State has represented the Big Ten in the BCS national championship game.  And for the second straight year, they lost.  This article is going to break one of the cardinal rules of this website:  Thou shall not talk bad about the Big Ten.  Well, the Big Ten is “down” and getting beat on the high profile, national stage bowl games.  Something has to be fixed, and we have some ideas.
